지난 회에 이어, 유용한 비즈니스 영어 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.
〈위반행위〉

A: Even though we signed the contract, we no longer want to sell the property since we found another buyer.
B: If you breach the terms of our contract then we’re going to seek legal action.
A: 계약서에 사인은 했지만 다른 구매자를 찾았으므로 부동산을 팔고 싶지 않습니다.
B: 계약 내용을 위반하면 법적인 조치를 취하겠습니다.
SITUATION 계약 조건을 위반한 경우
평범하게 Breaking the terms of our contract will result in litigation.
영어답게 Breaching the terms of our contract will result in litigation.
breach는 break와 어원이 같으며, 계약이나 조건 등을 위반한다고 할 때 쓸 수 있는 단어입니다.

A: Your company plagiarized our books.
B: I assure you that we have our own writers and have no need to copy from you. If you still feel that we plagiarized your books, I’d like to see you prove it in court.
A: 귀사는 우리 책을 표절했습니다.
B: 저희도 저자가 있어서 귀사의 책을 베낄 필요가 없었음을 분명히 말씀드립니다. 만일 여전히 저희가 귀사의 책을 표절했다고 생각한다면 법정에서 이를 증명하시기 바랍니다.
SITUATION 표절한 경우
평범하게 You completely copied our presentation.
영어답게 You completely plagiarized our presentation.
표절은 plagiarism이고, 동사 ‘표절하다’는 plagiarize입니다. 표절과 유사한 소프트웨어 불법 복제의 경우에는 ‘해적’을 뜻하는 pirate을 동사로 만들어 표현하는 경우가 많죠. 예를 들어 소프트웨어를 불법 복제 했다면 The computer engineer pirated more than one hundred video games.처럼 말할 수 있습니다.

A: Hey, I was wondering why you signed off on these sales invoices.
B: I never signed those invoices. Someone must have forged my signature.
A: 이봐, 이 계산서를 왜 승인했는지 궁금한데.
B: 그 계산서들 승인한 적 없는데요. 누가 제 사인을 위조했나 봅니다.
SITUATION 문서를 위조한 경우
평범하게 Someone must have copied the design of the certificates.
영어답게 Someone must have forged the certificates.
칼을 만드는 것처럼 쇠를 달구고 두드려 원하는 모양을 만드는 것을 forge라고 할 수 있습니다. 문서나 화폐에 대해 쓰면 ‘위조한다’라는 뜻이 되죠.
〈법적의무, 책임〉

A: I’ve checked our book, and we still haven’t received full payment from you. What seems to be the problem?
B: Well, you didn’t fulfill your end of the bargain, and that’s why we didn’t pay you in full. If you would still like to receive the balance, then I suggest that you finish the job.
A: 통장을 확인했는데 아직 결제가 안 되었더군요. 무슨 문제가 있나요?
B: 그쪽에서 계약 내용을 성실히 이행하지 않으셔서 전액을 결제하지 않은 것입니다. 차액을 지급받고 싶으시면 일을 다 마치시라고 말씀드리고 싶습니다.
SITUATION 의무를 충실히 이행하고 있을 때
평범하게 When you signed the contract, you became contractually obligated to do your duty.
영어답게 When you signed the contract, you became contractually obligated to fulfill your end of the agreement.
어떤 거래(bargain)가 성립하려면 두 당사자가 있어야 하죠. 양 끝의 당사자를 end로 나타낸 표현이 one’s end of the bargain입니다. your end of the bargain은 거의 정해진 표현처럼 쓰는데, ‘당신이 할 일’을 의미합니다. ‘이행한다’는 의미로는 보통 fulfill을 씁니다.

A: Since the company is in your father’s name, I cannot allow you to sell off the company’s assets. You’ll have to get your father’s written consent.
B: I have power of attorney for this situation and can have my lawyer contact you with the details.
A: 회사가 귀하의 아버지 이름으로 되어 있기 때문에 회사 자산을 매각하도록 허락할 수 없습니다. 아버지의 서면 동의를 받아야 합니다.
B: 이런 상황에 대비해서 위임장을 받았습니다. 자세한 내용은 변호사를 통해 말씀드릴 수 있습니다.
SITUATION ‘위임장’을 표현할 때
평범하게 My father gave me the legal right to represent him before he had Alzheimer’s.
영어답게 My father gave me power of attorney before he had Alzheimer’s.
‘변호사’의 영어 표현은 lawyer가 일반적이지만 attorney라는 단어도 쓰이죠. 변호사들의 명함을 보면 공식 직함은 보통 attorney at law로 표기되어 있습니다. attorney가 이처럼 ‘위임받은 사람’이란 뜻이므로, 위임장을 power of attorney라고 표현할 수 있는 것입니다.
